Glad to hear you checked before using it, was the piece you were considering under copyright?

As far as copyright holders locating materiel they hold licences for, I researched that after completely deleting the piece I'd used. Apparently the major copyright holders (who are legion! Unbelievable the huge numbers of corp's, org's & conglomerates in the copyright biz & the amount of media they're laying claim to. :( ) have "footprint" &/or "fingerprint" bots that ceaselessly sniff out anything on the web that matches up to their footprint records - even a tiny portion of a piece.

As a consequence of what happened I'm now only using sites that are strictly for CC licensed original works only & it's the artists themselves who do the uploading. Jamendo, ccMixter, etc. And, by doing a lot of browsing & listening, I'm finding some super music, including classical BTW, by some excellent artists. Ensuring whatever one uses on the web conforms with the type of CC license the artist has put on their work of course. Every artist on Jamendo has a web site link so you can ensure the CC license is their's as well as ask for any special permissions of use if needed. Downloading for free & enjoying & sharing is encouraged - I've already D/L 2 Gigs!!

Still a huge Supporter of the Internet Archive of course, just now know to be very cautious with CC uploads here.

Good luck with your production.
Cheers!
Indigo

Thanks Indigo for the feedback, it's very helpful!

I had a look at Jamendo and ccMixter, but they didn't have the song I was after (Mozart K.384). Any other sites you'd suggest?

Thanks a bunch :)

Glad to hear I was helpful, makes a nice change.

This copyright business is completely beyond reason when music written centuries before replicating anything was possible can now be copyright protected every time an artist chooses to perform it! I innocently used a movement from Saint-Saëns' 1886 suite "The Carnival of the Animals" in a video - to date seventeen music corp's are claiming copyright! I suspect Mozart would be very annoyed about 'the suits' owning his music. Sorry... Ranting again... :)

Okay... Sites... http://soundcloud.com/ http://www.newgrounds.com/ [looks like an unlikely place 'cos of the flash type graphics, etc., but I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of music there]; but I think you'd find CC org's list the most useful: http://creativecommons.org/legalmusicforvideos

I don't know if you've looked on YouTube but there are dozens of videos on there using ' Die Entführung aus dem Serail, K.384' - might be worth checking them to see if there are Open Source or CC versions?

Hope that's useful to you.
Cheers!
